Cross-border trading on GET Baltic gas exchange increased significantly during the first quarter of 2021

In the first quarter of 2021, total volume traded on GET Baltic gas exchange amounted to 3 TWh of natural gas – 30% more comparing to the same period last year (2.3 TWh). The number of transactions concluded on the exchange grew accordingly – 7,070 transactions were fulfilled during the first three months this year. The number of concluded transactions increased by 29% (Q1 2020 – 5,464 transactions). Growing competition and liquidity on the gas exchange resulted in the increased cross-border trading. 13% (405 GWh) of the total traded volume during Q1 2021 were executed in cross-border transactions, which is 54% more in comparison to Q1 2020 (262 GWh).

In March, the volume traded on the exchange amounted to 787 GWh of natural gas, in total 2,157 transactions were concluded. All transactions executed for delivery in March were fulfilled in short-term products. A total of 47 participants actively submitted orders, all of them successfully concluded transactions.

During March, the prices of individual transactions fluctuated between 14.00 EUR/MWh and 22.00 EUR/MWh. Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI) which captures changes of gas prices on a daily market, value in March was 18.29 EUR/MWh. This is 14% less comparing to February 2021 (21.15 EUR/MWh). Participants concluded transactions in Lithuanian market area paid the weighted average price of 18.20 EUR/MWh (↓14%), in Latvian-Estonian common market area – 18.05 EUR/MWh (↓9%), in Finnish market area – 18.60 EUR/MWh (↓16%).
