Increasing exchange participants activity was not influenced by rising natural gas prices. In September 2017 concluding 155 transactions the trading volumes on the Baltic gas exchange amounted to 118 GWh. 23% of total traded volume was bought in Latvian market area (27 GWh). Compared to the same period last year sales volumes were more than 5 times (22 GWh) higher, or 3% lower than in August 2017 (122 GWh) when 153 transactions were concluded. The greatest impact to moderate growth of exchange participants activity (number of fulfilled trades) was made by growing number of concluded transactions in Latvian market area, which was suppressed by rising natural gas prices at the beginning of the month.

Baltic Gas Spot Index (BGSI), which captures changes of natural gas prices in the Baltics, value in September 2017 was 17.25 EUR/MWh meanwhile in August 2017 its value was 16.93 EUR/MWh. BGSI was mainly formed by trades concluded in Lithuanian market area with weighted average price of 17.24 EUR/MWh. With rising activity in Latvian market area it is likely that in the nearest future trades concluded in Latvian market area will have increasing impact to BGSI. In September concluding first trades exclusively between Latvian exchange participants in Latvian market area (12 trades) weighted average price reached 17.29 EUR/MWh. For the second consecutive month there were no trades recorded in Estonian market area. It is expected that from the 3rd of October 2017 trading in Estonian market area will be encouraged by the start of trading new previous day product. The previous day product has been traded on Lithuanian market area since 2014, trade in this product makes up to 52% of the total exchange trading volume.
