Capturing the largest traded volumes in the daily market, October become a record-breaking month

At the beginning of the last quarter of the year, growing activity was captured on the Baltic- Finnish gas exchanges. The total traded volume reached 733 GWh of gas. Compared to the previous month, almost twice as many transactions were concluded during October (October 2020 – 2,212 transactions, September 2020 – 1,262 transactions).

A new traded volume record was reached in the daily market – 732 GWh of natural gas were traded during October. It is three times more comparing to September 2020 (247 GWh). Trading volumes grew across all market areas. While assessing each area separately, a record amount of gas (184 GWh) was purchased in the common Latvian-Estonian market area, and in Finland the highest traded volumes in history were reached on both: purchase (345 GWh) and sale (255 GWh) sides. In total 46 participants actively submitted orders, 45 of them successfully concluded transactions.

Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI) which captures daily market gas prices changes, value in October 2020 was 13.42 EUR/MWh (September 2020 – 9,58 EUR/MWh). Participants concluded transactions in Lithuanian market area paid the weighted average price of 12.64 EUR/MWh (↑34%), in common Latvian-Estonian market area – 13.19 EUR/MWh (↑40%), in Finnish market area – 14.25 EUR/MWh (↑44%). Baltic-Finnish Gas Monthly Index (BGMI), which captures monthly market gas prices changes, value in October 2020 was 12.80 EUR/MWh.
