In January, the volume traded grew by a third, the price of gas decreased by 46%

In the first month of 2023, with a record number of transactions concluded on the exchange – 3,575, 1.2 TWh of natural gas was traded, of which 301 GWh were traded on the monthly market. Compared to the previous month, the number of concluded transactions increased by 37% (2,615 in December 2022) and the trading turnover increased by 36% (912 GWh in December 2022). For the delivery day of January 5, a record amount of natural gas was traded reaching 81 GWh of natural gas. Moreover, in January one of the largest transaction in the history of GET Baltic was concluded, reaching 300 GWh of natural gas, which is only surpassed by a deal concluded in February 2020 (373 GWh). Exchange participants actively submitted orders – in January, the amount of orders submitted to buy natural gas reached 3.6 TWh and to sell – 4.8 TWh. Compared to January last year, the volume of submitted orders to buy increased by 83% and to sell by 46%. 59 exchange participants actively submitted orders on the exchange, which is 20% more than in the same period last year (49 in January 2022), all of them successfully concluded transactions.

With individual transaction prices ranging from EUR 28.74 EUR/MWh to EUR 108.00 EUR/MWh, the cheapest transaction since July 2021 was traded on the exchange. The value of the Baltic and Finnish natural gas price index BGSI, which measures price changes on a daily market, decreased by 46% compared to the previous month – from 126.96 EUR/MWh to 69.15 EUR/MWh. In January, BGSI reached 67.93 EUR/MWh (↓45%) on the Lithuanian market area, 68.63 EUR/MWh (↓46%) on the common Latvian-Estonian market area and 71.34 EUR/MWh (↓47%) in Finland. Meanwhile, the value of the BGMI gas price index of the monthly market in January amounted to 107.94 EUR/MWh. At the end of January, price index BGSI formed around 60 EUR/MWh.
