In June, the average natural gas price on the GET Baltic exchange operating in the Baltic countries and Finland was 41.60 euros per megawatt-hour (EUR/MWh), or 1% higher than in May, when the average price was 41.01 EUR/MWh.
Last month, compared to May, the gas price in the Lithuanian market area decreased by 4% to 39.71 EUR/MWh. In the common Latvian–Estonian market area, the gas price increased by 1% to 40.58 EUR/MWh, while in Finland it rose by 10% to 44.66 EUR/MWh. Natural gas prices in individual transactions ranged from 34 to 55 EUR/MWh.
“Gas prices have recently remained at a similar, stable level. However, with the start of the summer season and a decrease in gas consumption, as well as due to the scheduled maintenance of the Balticconnector pipeline between Estonia and Finland, a slowdown in trading activity was observed on the exchange in June,” comments Karolis Bagdonas, Client Manager at GET Baltic.
In the first month of the summer season, 419 GWh of natural gas were traded on the GET Baltic exchange – more than twice less than in May, when the trading volume reached a record-high for this month in the exchange’s history – 888 GWh. In June, trading volumes were distributed evenly across the market areas: 157 GWh or 37% of the total traded gas volume were purchased in the Lithuanian market area, 133 GWh or 32% in the Latvian–Estonian market trading area, and 129 GWh or 31% in Finland. A total of 54 exchange participants actively submitted orders, concluding nearly 2,000 transactions.
