Competition in the natural gas exchange increases as number of active exchange participants has grown

Baltic Gas Exchange GET Baltic starts year 2019 capturing new activity record. After concluding record number of transactions (1313), traded volumes exceeded 694 GWh of natural gas and became the largest monthly traded turnover since the launch of GET Baltic. Comparing both month on month and year on year traded volumes increased even 18 times. Volume traded for delivery in January 2019 exceeded the total volume traded in 2017 and amounted to more than a half of 2018 volume. The greatest impact to traded volumes was due to the changes in Lithuanian legislation, which came into force on 1 January 2019. Regulated energy producers in Lithuania became a part of competitive natural gas market and active participants of the Baltic Gas Exchange. Even 29 participants submitted orders and concluded transactions during January 2019 (December 2018 – 16).

The first monthly market transaction was concluded for delivery in January. Baltic Gas Monthly Index (BGMI) was launched to captures monthly market gas price changes. BGMI value in January 2019 was 24.60 EUR/MWh.

Baltic Gas Spot Index (BGSI) which captures gas prices changes of daily market in the Baltics, value in January 2019 was 24.27 EUR/MWh and compared to December 2018 (25.75 EUR/MWh) decreased by 6%. Exchange participants concluded transactions in Lithuanian market area paid the weighted average price of 24.30 EUR/MWh (↓6%), in Latvian market area – 23.77 EUR/MWh (↓6%), Estonian market area – 24.54 EUR/MWh (↓5%).
